Instructions: create or pick one or more reasons to train that have personal meaning. Write them down in a list, and make several copies if useful. Post the lists as reminders for why you are getting after it. A pdf version will also be available soon.
I’m training in order to:
- Feel energetic and alive
- Feel and look attractive
- Do well or better in a race or other competition
- Keep up with somebody (friend, kid, grandkid, other)
- Enjoy challenging physical activities
- Bond with a dog or give it a serious workout
- Get or stay lean
- Prepare for zombie and/or alien invasions
- Increase productivity at school or work
- Increase mental clarity
- Increase brain function (ability to concentrate, solve problems, etc.)
- Make the _____ team (name the sport and level)
- Have more fun in sports
- Make some kind of comeback
- Get better at some sport or other physical activity (like being able to ski more terrain)
- Dunk a basketball
- Drive a golf ball farther
- Climb things (mountains, stairs, hills, rocks, cliffs, frozen waterfalls, etc.)
- Rehab or avoid an injury
- Get rid of back pain
- Break a cycle of getting sick or injured
- Prevent or eliminate stress
- Improve immune system function/get sick less
- Feel good about self/build self-esteem
- Learn about perceived and “actual” physical (and mental) limitations
- Be able to pick up heavy things (toddlers, weights, loads of wood, etc.)
- Move faster than ever (or than before) – on foot, on a bike, in water, etc.
- Enjoy nature
- Enliven physically intimate activities
- Enjoy more amounts or kinds of foods while staying in energy balance
